Traditional corneal flap vs Intralase
For some surgeries, your doctor may elect to use a microkeratome to create the corneal flap. A microkeratome is a hand held surgical instrument which creates an incision in the cornea, thus creating the a corneal flap. The intralase bladeless lasik creates a laser incision. With intralase a blade is not necessary.
Denver Intralase
Intralase and traditional microkeratome are not painful.
Some patients may not be eligible for intralase lasik or lasik performed with a microkeratome. In that case, photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK) maybe necessary. To determine if you are a candidate for laser vision correction, it is necessary for you to come in for a free complete vision evaluation. If PRK is necessary, PRK is performed by scraping the surface of the cornea. PRK is more painful than LASIK yet produces comparable long term outcomes. Another type of surgery you may hear about is Epi-LASIK. EPI-LASIK uses an epikeratome which is a blunt separator creating a superficial flap.
