Icon LASIK Adds an Ocular Response Analyzer to its Denver Office
Icon is one of, if not the first and only, LASIK clinic in Colorado to add a Reichert Ocular Response Analyzer to its already impressive list of pre-LASIK diagnostic tools.
The Ocular Response Analyzer uses a bi-directional applanation process to measure the biomechanical properties of the cornea and the Intraocular Pressure of the eye. The result of this measurement is a number referred to as the Goldmann-correlated pressure measurement (IOPG), and a new measure of corneal tissue properties called Corneal Hysteresis (CH). Clinical studies (and Icon's experience) suggest that the CH measurement may be useful in the identification of corneal conditions such as Keratoconus and Fuchs’ Dystrophy. For the average LASIK patient Icon can now better determine which patients are good candidates for LASIK and which should not get the procedure. In particular, the CH measurement has the potential to identifying refractive surgery candidates who are at risk of developing post-LASIK ectasia.
Improved Pre-LASIK Screening
The clinical LASIK data from several studies displays a general reduction in post-LASIK corneal hysteresis and CRF. Pre and post LASIK CH data are presented in the image below which was presented by David Luce, Ph.D and David Taylor. Some experts hypothesize that reduced post-LASIK CH/CRF is not primarily a function of corneal thinning, but rather a result of weakening of the structure related to the creation of the flap.
LASIK experts now believe that the CH measurement is useful in customizing ablation algorithms in order to better predict and control LASIK outcomes. Icon's independent doctors have performed over 100,000 procedures in Colorado. With this experience and these new diagnostic tools, Icon can advise patients on their candidacy for laser vision correction.
